Liberty High School (Hillsboro School District, Hillsboro, OR) – a medium-sized, suburban school in Hillsboro, located west of Portland, that is rapidly growing
Liberty High School opened in September 2003 to 850 students with a diverse population; about 40% are students of color. In its first year of operation, the school was based on the foundation of “Advisories” or “Academies”. Students selected one of four small learning communities based on an area of interest. About 300 students are in each of the four academies: Health & Human Services, Business & Media, Science, Engineering & Technology, and Art, Communication, and Technology.
To ensure a personalized school, all students in a academy are housed in a wing of the school with its own community center, counseling office, shared teacher office, and science labs. The students are also grouped together for their core academic classes. Students report to an advisor two or three times a week for all four years with other academy students to further personalize their education, set goals, voice issues, and to provide service to the community. By the time they are juniors, all students will be enrolled in a focused program of study learning to advanced application classes and career related learning experiences their senior year. To complete their program, all students will demonstrate a senior exhibition.
